In his  letter to the saints, Apostle Peter one of the pillars of the early church admonished that they be eager to make their calling and election sure for that would guarantee their steadfastness in the faith. This is the way the New International Version puts his words written in 2 peter 1: 10 “Therefore my brothers and sisters, make every effort to  confirm your calling and election, for if you do these things, you will never stumble.”

So, just a little thought on those words. Could it mean that our stamina in Christ depends in a way on how effective we are in God? Or what did the Patriarch mean when he said “make every effort to confirm your calling and election”?

Okay, since it is just a thought, this is what I thought about lately: How beautiful it is when people born of God distinctively and diligently show forth God’s glory through the things they do in their different sphere of endeavours. Doing good works, depicting excellence, competence, sincerity, humility and reflecting Him in all forms of beauty.

I love it each time I see this beauty radiate. When people are resourceful in what they do, when people are solutions to the problems within and around them, when God uses people to extend His arms of love to a world that is always in need of help and this is one virtue I hope we consciously build every passing day; a life that continuously shows forth good works.

Jesus Christ went about doing good, healing the sick, raising the dead, feeding the hungry, spreading the good news of liberation and much more and before He left, He gave this command “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven”.  This could mean that one responsibility we have as those born of God is to do good works, to reflect His glory and to shine forth regardless of where we are.

In the disposition we find ourselves, In the world we all live, the obvious truth is that for us to be effective in good works and to shine forth, we too need to be equipped for good works.

So how do we go about that? How do we equip ourselves to become the solution our world seeks? And then answers the words of Apostle Peter “make every effort to confirm your calling and election”

Which means we have a part of the game to roll, we are to make every effort, to be diligent enough to ensure we are equipped for things we ought to do. For how will we get into certain positions to effect positive changes if we are not equipped?  How will we handle things that require certain level of competence and proffer solutions if we are not vested and equipped to handle such?  How can we control certain events and become authorities in different areas when we do not understand the skill it takes?

So, if you ask me I would say that I think we should look within us once again and check out for the things that seem to be hindering our light from shinning, those things that limit us from being effective in doing good works. This is the advice Apostle Peter gave in verse 5 to 8 of 2 peter chapter one “For this reason make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self –control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness; love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I think that one of the obligations we have in the body of Christ is that we be effective in good works, and yes! Not that we have been lagging in doing these things, but this is more like a reminder that the light we have become a part of in Christ should not remain within cycles but should radiate so bright where ever we are, that we be solutions to our world’s problems and no mediocre does that. Hence, we need to fit ourselves into that position to which we have been called by standing out in excellence for who we are, and to whom we belong (CHRIST).
